Nawaz Sharif Admits Pakistan Violated 1999 Lahore Declaration with India

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently stated that Pakistan violated the 1999 Lahore Declaration agreement with India. The Lahore Declaration, signed by Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on February 21, 1999, aimed to foster mutual understanding and avoid conflict, particularly focusing on nuclear weapons and the prevention of their accidental or unauthorized use.

Sharif’s remarks underscore the failure to uphold the commitments of the declaration, particularly following the Kargil War later that year, which strained relations between the two countries. The Lahore Declaration was intended to build confidence and promote peace, but the conflict highlighted the challenges in maintaining such agreements amid ongoing tensions.
