A.R. Rahman: The Global Sound of India’s Musical Soul

Birth and Early Life

A.R. Rahman was born on January 6, 1966, in Chennai (then Madras), India. His birth name was A.S. Dileep Kumar.

Music was in his blood from the start. His father, R.K. Shekhar, was a well-known conductor and composer for Tamil and Malayalam films. However, tragedy struck the family when Rahman was only nine years old. His father passed away, leaving the family in a difficult financial situation. Young Rahman had to drop out of school to support his mother and sisters by playing the keyboard in bands and for other composers.

The Spiritual Journey: Conversion to Islam

In his early 20s, Rahman underwent a major spiritual transformation. The catalyst was a period of intense personal and family crisis. When his younger sister fell seriously ill, the family met a Sufi saint, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jailani (also known as Qadri Saaheb), who helped them through the ordeal.

Deeply moved by the peace and discipline he found in Sufi teachings, Rahman—along with his mother and sisters—converted to Islam in 1989. He chose the name Allah Rakha Rahman (A.R. Rahman). Interestingly, Rahman has mentioned in interviews that the name “Rahman” was actually suggested by a Hindu astrologer whom his mother had consulted for his sister’s marriage. He officially adopted the new name just before the release of his first major film, Roja, in 1992.

Global Achievements and the Oscar Moment

Rahman’s career changed forever with Roja. His fresh, electronic sounds revolutionized Indian film music. Over the decades, he became a household name across India and eventually the world.

  • The First Oscar (2009): Rahman made history at the 81st Academy Awards. He won two Oscars for the film Slumdog Millionaire:

    1. Best Original Score

    2. Best Original Song (for the global hit “Jai Ho”).

  • Other Major Awards: He is one of the most decorated artists in the world, having won:

    • 2 Grammy Awards

    • 1 BAFTA Award

    • 1 Golden Globe Award

    • 6 National Film Awards

    • Over 30 Filmfare Awards

A Recent Reflection on the Industry

In a very recent and widely discussed interview (January 2026), A.R. Rahman shared a candid truth about the current state of the Hindi film industry (Bollywood). He noted that over the past eight years, work opportunities for him in Mumbai have slowed down.

“People who are not creative have the power now to decide things, and this might have been a communal thing also, but not in my face. It comes to me as Chinese whispers,” he said.

He later clarified that his intention was never to cause pain but to highlight how “shifting power dynamics” affect creative freedom. Despite these challenges, Rahman remains one of India’s most respected icons, recently completing a “rampage” of 20-30 film projects to ensure his music continues to reach the next generation.

The Legacy of Peace

A.R. Rahman’s story is not just about music; it is about resilience and finding a path that brings internal tranquility. Whether he is composing a spiritual hymn or a high-energy dance track, his goal remains the same: to connect people through the universal language of melody.
